About Indiekid Films
At Indiekid we think outside box, our kids color outside the lines.
We are parents, friends of parents and inquisitive kids. We are film professionals and art fanatics, eager to share the world of independent cinema with the children in our lives. We’ve created the Indiekid Portable Film Festival for our families and yours; a collection of engaging and intelligent shorts for young audiences, streaming on your portable device.
We actively seek exceptional films from around the world bringing the festival experience into our homes and the back seat of our mini vans. Our films open doors to other cultures, reflect on art and engage our children in the kind of cinematic dialogue which help shape creative lives. Our filmmakers are incredibly diverse; from adult documentary directors specializing in musical wildlife films to kid animators who are picking up clay and camera for the 1st time. Reflecting on the world around them, our filmmakers offer us glimpses of life in Africa, Belgium, Vietnam, China, Estonia and right next door.
With limited screenings most of these films have only been seen international children’s film festivals without going into wider distribution. At Indiekid, we are changing that. Indiekid Films promotes the global exchange of ideas where every child’s opinion is valued and cultivated and creative work is celebrated. These are the movies film lovers of all ages have been waiting for.
About Shawn Bowman
Los Angeles Times, April 2005 - “intolerance for commercial pap is compelling parents like Bowman to seek and in some cases organize screenings of independent film options for their kids. These labors of love are born of desperation and disappointments…"what we’re doing here isn’t necessarily of national importance, but at the same time, what we’re doing is happening all over the country. There’s a culture demanding a certain level of film."
Shawn Bowman’s introduction to the film world was through the scrappy and demanding job of a production assistant in NYC, cutting her teeth on dozens of features, music videos and commercials. As a location manager and production coordinator, Bowman worked for prominent directors Griffin Dunne, Fisher Stephens and Spike Jones on independent feature film projects.
She has five years experience teaching production and media literacy to at-risk kids in film enrichment programs.
For the last three years Bowman has hosted international film festivals bringing remarkable world class cinema to young people in her community. She holds a BFA in film production from the University of Colorado.
The curator of dozens of film festivals for kids, Bowman also teaches comic book writing to kids and authors humorous craft books for adults.
